Blogtour: Along the Watchtower by David Litwack

Posted on 23:30 by Unknown
A Tragic Warrior Lost in Two Worlds…

The war in Iraq ended for Lieutenant Freddie Williams when an IED explosion left his mind and body shattered. Once he was a skilled gamer and expert in virtual warfare. Now he’s a broken warrior, emerging from a medically induced coma to discover he’s inhabiting two separate realities. The first is his waking world of pain, family trials, and remorse—and slow rehabilitation through the tender care of Becky, his physical therapist. The second is a dark fantasy realm of quests, demons, and magic that Freddie enters when he sleeps.
In his dreams he is Frederick, Prince of Stormwind, who must make sense of his horrific visions in order to save his embattled kingdom from the monstrous Horde. His only solace awaits him in the royal gardens, where the gentle words of the beautiful gardener, Rebecca, calm the storms in his soul. While in the conscious world, the severely wounded vet faces a strangely similar and equally perilous mission—a journey along a dark road haunted by demons of guilt and memory—and letting patient, loving Becky into his damaged and shuttered heart may be his only way back from Hell.

Please enjoy this gripping excerpt from Along the Watchtower by David Litwack. Then read on to learn how you can win huge prizes as part of this blog tour, including a Kindle Fire, $650 in Amazon gift cards, and 5 autographed copies of each book.

Becky

On the ground floor, the center of the hospital opened into a small courtyard, an insecure space with too many places for insurgents to hide. I took a quick breath and tensed. “Wait up, Ralph.” “It’s okay, Freddie. You’re safe here.” “Give me a minute. It’s my first time out.” I surveyed the perimeter. A few benches. A flower garden dominated by hydrangeas, but not like the softball-sized blossoms my mom used to grow. These were small and paler than the Cape Cod variety, which were a blue that could compete with the sky. At once, I could see my mom, hands buried in the hydrangeas, grooming her flowers—one of the few memories I could bear to recall. Me and my brothers in the driveway shooting hoops. Mom telling us to keep the ball out of her garden. She was happy then, surrounded by her family, her garden, and the ocean. I looked past the hydrangeas to find purple asters and some lilies too. But no roses. For some reason, I’d been hoping for roses. Despite the nice day, the courtyard was deserted, except for a woman about my age who sat on a wooden bench, finishing up a brown-bag lunch. Her eyes were closed and her head tipped back to take in the sun, making her appear to be dreaming. Sitting alone on the bench, her face seemed framed by flowers. When she heard us coming, she sat up, straightened her scrubs, and smiled. “Hey, Ralph. What do you have there? Another victim for me?” “Becky,” Ralph said. “What’s up? This is Freddie, Lt. Williams, our newest patient. We’re trying to bring him back from the dead. Freddie, meet Becky Marshall, one of our physical therapists.” I nodded a greeting to her, not much in the mood for small talk. She tilted her head to one side as if evaluating me. Then she gave me the kind of look that said we’d met before, if not in this world than in another, and that she intended to make a difference in my life. “Is he ready for me?” “Soon. If he’s assigned to you.” My attention was drawn to a soda can on the bench next to her. I’d seen too many IEDs in soda cans. She caught me fixating on it and grinned. “Just my diet Pepsi, Freddie. See?” She chugged what was left and tossed the can into a nearby trash basket. Then she crumpled the bag into a ball and to show off, stepped off exactly five paces and shot the bag into the basket in a perfect arc. “Nice shot,” I said. “I make that shot every time.” “Yeah, right.” She came close enough that our knees were almost touching and hovered over me, sizing me up. “You’ll be mine,” she said finally. “I can tell. I get all the hard cases.” As she walked away, light on her feet like a dancer, I fumbled for the wheel of the chair, trying to spin it around so I could watch her go. But Ralph had set the brake.

The Gardener

The white butterfly fluttered before her face. When she saw it, she reached out a hand and at once it landed on the curve of her wrist. “Now there’s a fine omen for you,” she said. “Light knows we need one these days.” She whispered some words and the butterfly flew off across the courtyard and out over the castle wall. A fine omen? Perhaps. But I’d learned to be wary. I stepped forward, scuffling my boots to make noise. She ignored my presence. Not until I was a pace away did she turn. It was hard to say if she was beautiful or even pretty. Soil from the garden had splattered her cheeks and marked her forehead with a splotch that looked like a raven. A muddied apron hid her shape. But I took note of a glint in her gray-green eyes, as if the flowers had conspired to lend their color. And her mouth was a crescent moon upturned on its side. The corners of the crescent twitched when she saw me but only for an instant. Then she went back to her work as if I were invisible. Her hands cradled each bloom as she sliced off the heads with a small knife. “Are you spirit or demon?” I demanded. She made no answer. I drew my sword, relieved it slipped so easily from its scabbard, and stretched it in her direction. She watched the point from the corner of her eye but kept her head down and continued to work. Finally, I nudged her with the tip. She let out a yelp. Only then did I realize I’d thrust too hard, and the blade had slit her garment. I backed off at once, ready to apologize, but then recalled my encounter with the assassin. I poked again, more gently this time. “Why do you keep doing that?” she said. “To see if you’re real.” She stood and faced me, feet set wide and planted squarely on the ground. “Why shouldn’t I be real?” She was tall for a girl, her head rising above my chin, and had a bearing unlike a servant. When I continued to challenge her, she reached out and eased the point of my sword to one side. “Would you put that silly thing away?” I began to back off, then remembered the circumstance and held firm. “Why didn’t you say anything when I first approached you?” “Because we servants aren’t supposed to talk to you royals.” She lowered her gaze and turned back to the flowers. “I’m sorry . . . Milord.” “What’s your name?” “Rebecca.” “Rebecca. My name is Frederick.” She paled and then bent in a deep curtsy, her brashness collapsing into two whispered words. “The dauphin.” . . . I wandered in a circle, hands folded behind my back, and inspected the flowers, unsure of what else to say. Then a thought occurred to me. “Do you have roses in this garden?” “No roses, Milord. I have asters and hydrangeas. Some fall crocus. And climbing the wall to the watchtower, sweet autumn clematis. A bit of monkshood underneath and tulips in the spring. But no roses.” I must have looked disappointed. She came closer and reached out, but not enough to touch me. “It must be lonely, Milord, a terrible burden. Every morning as I walk from my village to the gardens, I see the darkening clouds and wonder where my strength will come from. Then I remember. The dauphin will protect us. Save Him Oh Goddess, I pray. If only I could do something to help.” I mumbled a thank you and turned to go, but stopped when I saw her examining her damaged apron. “Are you here every day?” “No, Milord, I have other gardens as well.” “Come tomorrow, and I’ll bring you a new apron to replace the one I tore.” She curtsied more deeply this time. “I’d be so grateful, Milord, but I have nothing to give in return.” “No need.” “Ah, wait.” She took her small knife and clipped off a bulging blossom at the stem and handed it to me. “Now place it in water the first chance you get.” I accepted the gift and admired her through its petals. “Thank you,” I said. “Tomorrow at noon.” As I walked away, I glanced over my shoulder to get one last look at the gardener. She was back at her work, resuming her song and snipping away, so light of hand and foot. As she blew away a curl that had drifted across her face, the summer dress rustled against her skin. I inhaled the scent of the flower and thought I caught the sun peeking through the clouds over Golgoreth. And for the first time since my father died, goddesses seemed possible.

{Rockstar blogtour} Book review and giveaway of Jaded by Mercy Amare

Posted on 13:13 by Unknown

Author: Mercy Amare
Title: Jaded
Series: The rockstar trilogy #1
Genre: New adult, contemporary romance
My e-copy: from author for review
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | Smashwords
My rating: Four feet

I'm Scarlett Ryan.
Yes, THAT Scarlett Ryan.
I live an extraordinary life: millionaire rock star, owner of exotic cars, pictures of me in every magazine, millions of fans, and a name that is recognized world wide. It's supposed to be my dream come true. But, my life IS a fantasy, and I want real. I want exciting. I want... NORMAL. So, I moved from California to Florida, hoping to obtain some normalcy. Instead I find...
Stephan Montgomery.
He's an arrogant jerk. Seriously, I hate him. I swear if he tells me one more blonde joke, I will punch him... again... Unfortunately I can't stop thinking about him, or his gorgeous green eyes. Trust me, I know that he's bad for me. If only my heart would listen.
I also find out that my parents have kept a LIFE CHANGING secret from me. I need to know the truth. The harder I strive for normal, the stranger things seem to get.
My thoughts:

I finished this book with a smile on my face. I really enjoyed it!
The plot was good with twists and turns. You also get some WTF moments and I really liked that :)
The whole feeling of the book felt raw. Pure and raw emotions as well as the language. It do need some editing but it was ok anyway. I loved that there was no censure on the language. The charachters spoke their mind and that's what I felt was raw and pure.

The charachters:
Scarlett is a really good lead charachter and I really liked her. Although she felt very immature and selfish at times she really grows on you.
She evolves and in the end of the book she really has grown into a bit more of an adult.
I get why she is the way she is since her lifestyle is anything but normal.

Stephan is yummy with his green eyes and badboy attitude. He has his sceletons in the closet but I love him anyway :) He feels really honest and speaks his mind. He and Scar is a perfect match!

Ethan is the "stepbrother" of Stephan. When we first got introduced to him I kind of thought for a very short time that he was the one going to end up with Scar. But in came Stephan and that thought went away quickly.

I really liked the love story between Scar and Stephan. In the end of the book we kind of got a little cliffhanger and it really made me want to read book 2 so that I get to know more of whats going to happen with all of their lives. This is a book to recommend!

Excerpt

“Do you feel this?” he whispered hoarsely. “You have to feel this. It can’t just be me. There’s no fucking way it can just be me.”
My mouth was open but nothing came out.
I felt all of it. Every. Single. Bit of it.

And then his hand slid behind my neck, cradling me just above my shoulders, his long fingers moving over my body with a hunger and an urgency that I matched. I might have moaned, in fact, I’m sure I did because his eyes widened, and his lips parted.

I felt…I felt crazy but without the crazy.
It was the anticipation. It was all the moments and seconds and minutes that had passed between us over the last few days. It was that first time I’d glanced over my shoulder and spied him in Matt’s loft. It was his breath at my cheek the night before. It was want.
It was all of that and so much more.

“I feel you,” I whispered.
And then his hot, demanding mouth was on mine, and that so much more, became suddenly clear.
It was everything.

Genre: Adult, paranormal romance
My copy: ARC e-copy received by Tour host

Jenna O’ Conner has been taught her whole life to hide from everyone. Never to let anyone to close enough to know that she would prefer a shotgun for her birthday over of a bouquet of roses. She’s been smothered by her over protective family so that no one learns what she truly is. Which is not human. Nor, is she considered the norm for the supernatural Other community that is benevolent enough to share this world with the humans.
In a desperate attempt to live her own life away from the small town she was raised in, Jenna obtains her dream job as the newest member on the Wilmington Police Department’s SWAT Team. What she didn’t predict was that she would run into trouble her first day on the job, in the form of a deadly, mouthwatering man named Adam McPhee. Who is also not human, but more like a wolf walking around in human skin. He’s determined to figure out exactly what Jenna is, which unbeknownst to him, could very well put her life in danger. He’s also determined to have her all to himself. As if that wasn’t enough for Jenna to deal with, bad news blows into town. A group of extremist Shifters who think humans are cattle and factions of Others worldwide should stay within their own species - never to intermingle. Chaos ensues. Jenna has to find a way to shut them down, but in the process of trying to do that, discovers things about herself that even she never thought was possible.
My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this book! It was a fun and exiting read that I highly enjoyed! It was kind of hard to put it down once I started reading it. When I opened the book I was thrown inside the action right away since we meet Jenna a cop on the swat team ready to bring in a suspect for murder! I love when you get thrown right inside the action! This book really captured my attention from start to finish.

Jenna is a really strong main character. She is not only strong in the physical sense but also has a really strong mind. She doesn't take anyone's shit, no matter who it is, and she doesn't bow for anyone. You just have to love her for that. But she is also kind of headstrong and that is sometimes kind of irritating and cute at the same time.

Adam the other main character of the book is swoon worthy for sure. He is all male and very close to his animal, an animal that sometimes is very close to take over the control! He is not one to play with but drool you will! He is totally adorable but some of his male dominance is kind of irritating for both me as a reader and for Jenna. Like I said she doesn't bow for anyone and that includes Adam and that drives him mad!
The love story between the two is amazing and make you wish for something like it for yourself! Who wouldn't want a big bad wolf that is insanely in love with you and would do anything to protect you. It doesn't hurt that he is sexy as hell too!

I loved this book! It was funny and made me laugh at times, insanely romantic, and a lot exiting! This was a really wonderful book that was hard to put down, but not impossible and I recommend it strongly! It will be well worth your time, I promise!

{Veer Blog Tour} Book review

Title: Veer
Author: Alyssa Rose Ivy
Series: Clayton Falls #2
Genre:New adult
Purchase: Amazon
My Rating: 3

Only when you let go can you learn to live.
Between the death of her mother and pushing through law school without her best friend, it's been a tough year for Becca. Needing a break from Boston, she moves to a tiny coastal North Carolina town for a relaxing summer. After bumping heads repeatedly with a local cop, she realizes her summer will be anything but quiet.
Three years after a career ending injury ruins his chance to play Major League Baseball, Gavin has a distrust of northerners and lately girls in general. He wants nothing to do with a girl who is only in town for the summer.
When the two give in to their impossible attraction, they realize that they may just have found the key to freeing themselves from the ghosts of their pasts.
Veer

So, What do I think?
The first book in this series called "Derailed" I really enjoyed a lot. That made me look forward to reading this second book in the series.
The two main characters in this one we get to follow on the sidelines in Derailed and I didn´t really pay them that much attention except that I thought that Gavin was this obnoxious self centered guy who had way to much confidence.
Boy was I wrong! He was not obnoxious at all =)

Once you get into his head and sees his point of view you really start to understand him a lot better and I started to really like him. He has been through some though things that set him on a different path in life than he expected. Sure, it turned out to be great for him in the end but the way there was not smooth sailing.

Becca comes to town to spend summer with her best friend Molly after the death of her mother.
She is just looking for a quiet and nice summer, which she will not get buy the way heh.
Becca has also been through really hard things with taking care of her dying mother and then eventually the death of her mother. She also has some safety feeling-issues that she has to deal with after a traumatic life event in her past.
The attraction between Gavin and Becca is kind of a rollercoster sometimes with insecurities and confusion.

I loved the feeling of the story. It´s a pleasant read with nice pace and never a boring moment. It is not an action filled book but there are still things happening that makes you want to continue.

Alyssa Rose Ivy was great at painting a world with letters and I could really picture this little town in my head. I almost want to go there!

So, if you are looking for a cozy and easy read you should pick this one up!

Summary:

Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.
Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.
My thoughts:

I loved this book. It was so different from other books I´ve read in this genre. And even though the concept isn´t new. Michaels makes her novel new and unique (as far as my knowledge goes).  I loved that even though you could guess it, Michaels did not let the secret of this book slip to easy. And the guessing makes you want to read more so it was a smart move to keep readers going. I usually prefer reading books in first person but somehow it worked out really well for this story to be written in third person.

Iris our heroine in this book is a strong woman and even though she has asthma and is strongly physically prevented to do anything like running or have to strong emotions she is not stopped by this and you have to love that about her. Even though she physically week she has a very strong spirit. I also feel like she is developing during the story and keeps getting stronger in spirit. She is a very likeable character and you can really feel everything she feels and wants out of her life.

there are many side characters as well around Iris that builds this story and makes it into something great. Like the boy with secrets of his own. Her father who in an attempt to protect her has lied to her most of life. And we get to meet many more wonderful characters in this book. I can´t wait for the sequel to come out so I can keep on reading this amazing story.

Owlet Excerpt

Falling forward onto her hands and knees, Iris felt like her soul was taking over her physical body and she bent forward trying to stay alert. The rustling next to her grew louder and she thought she saw someone walk out from the tree line, but as soon as the person had appeared they were gone.

Diana came running up behind her. “Iris!” she yelled, and before Iris knew it she was flipped on her back and an inhaler was pressed to her lips.

When she could breathe again Iris sat up and bent over her legs trying to stretch out her back, hoping it would help loosen her lungs. When she looked up, Diana was staring at her with wide eyes, only inches away from her face.

“You ran? You’re a lifelong asthmatic. Why did you run? It’s not like you can tell me that you just forgot that you can’t. What aren’t you telling me, Iris?” Diana’s face was calculating and firm but Iris remained silent. “I just came to this island and faced my one true fear for you. You should know by now that you can tell me anything. But more than that, I can’t protect you if you are hiding things from me.”

Iris still stayed quiet, not sure what to say. She sat there thinking as Diana stared her down. Finally, sighing deeply, Diana moved away and gave Iris some space. Turning, she surveyed their surroundings.

“I have dreamt about this place.” Iris heard herself say. “I wanted to know if the dream was real. I wanted to see the house.”

Diana was watching her again. Her eyebrows furrowed as she stood up and closed her eyes for a moment, as if needing to clear her head. When she opened them again she reached her hand down to help Iris up. “Okay. Let’s see.”

Diana looked hesitant but followed Iris towards the house. “Can I...maybe...do this on my own?” Iris asked. When she looked at Diana again she almost wished she hadn’t. She didn’t want to hurt Diana but she needed to know. Iris needed to see it the way she had in her dreams.

“Go.” Diana said simply, sitting down on the ground. “I will wait here, come and get me when you’re ready or holler, but keep your inhaler with you. I need to make a call anyway and let your father know we arrived safely, reception at the house might be shoddy.”

As Iris turned towards the house she wondered why Diana was letting her go but when she glanced back Diana seemed to be urgently whispering into the phone.

Synopsis:

There are two kinds of people in the land of Marlenia.
The Marlenians, who live on the surface,
and the Freetors, who are forced to live underground.

The war between them ended two hundred years ago, but the Freetors still fight for the right to live under the sun. Fifteen-year-old Kiera Driscoll embodies the Freetors’ hopes as the Violet Fox. In a violet cape and mask, she sneaks around Marlenia City stealing food and freeing her people from slavery.
Then the Elders task her with a secret mission: retrieve a stolen tome that contains the secrets of Freetor magic, something the Marlenians both fear and covet. Kiera must disguise herself as a noblewoman and infiltrate the Marlenian castle before the Freetor-hating Advisor finds out her real identity, before her brother is imprisioned because of the secrets he hides, and before she falls any more in love with the prince she’s supposed to hate. More is happening in the castle than she realizes, and Kiera is faced with a difficult choice. Will she be loyal to her people and their fight for freedom, or will she be loyal to her heart?

My thoughts:

When  I first started to read this book, I have to be honest with you, I wasn't all that excited. The cover is not a favorite. However this is a perfect example of how stupid it can be, to judge a book by it's cover. And if I am to be honest, I do. Very often I do.
This book was an amazing, great read and I am happy I said yes to this review because I was hooked after the first chapter. It was well written and fun. Marshall was great at describing her world and it was easy to visualise it with the large underground caves and the beautiful castle above ground.

The main character of this book is a very strong female, maybe a little to strong or rather a bit to full of herself. She really believed in herself, so much that I was a bit annoyed with her at the beginning of this story. But she will be a tiny bit more humble as the story goes and she falls for the one person she should not. I love when you read a book and the author throws in things in the story you do not expect and that happens a few times in The violet fox and I love that. It gives you surprises and keep you on your toes.

The only thing I have that could possibly bring this book down a tiny bit is that I felt like to much happened in the end. I felt like the book didn´t have to have such a clean ending when there will be more books in this series. A cliff-hanger would have been great here but other than that this is a great read with lots of humour, love, excitement. And where our heroine has identity crisis and loyalty issues to deal with on almost a daily basis.

I can´t wait for the next book in this series and what will happen to our very brave heroine then?

Blog tour, book review: Back to Bataan by Jerome Charyn

Tribute books blog tour
Author: Jerome Charyn
Title: Back to Bataan
Series: None
Genre:  Historical young adult
Purchase: B&N | Amazon
My rating: 4 stars

About the book:
New York City, 1943. War is raging in Europe and the Pacific, while Jack Dalton is stuck attending Dutch Masters Day School. What Jack really wants is to enlist in the army, to fight...
Everything changes when Coco, Jack's "fiancee," throws him over for one of his classmates. Jack sees red and does something drastic. Then he runs away. Hiding out in a nearby park, Jack joins ranks with a group of vagrants and is soon under the sway of a man called the Leader, an ex-convict who is as articulate and charismatic as he is dangerous. The Leader turns Jack's world upside down. To put things right, Jack must prove himself a braver soldier than he ever imagined.

My thoughts:
When I began reading this book I was thinking that this book was not all that good. But then I started to realize that I was looking at it all wrong. This book was not what I thought it would be. It was not the usual YA that I usually read and so it would be wrong to judge it by that. So I changed my "glasses" and started over and what I found was actually really good. This book is more of a serious historical young adult and it is a book who will leave you in thought. I actually think this book would be a perfect read in school. You know one of those obligated books you have to read in school and then discuss in class. I think this book would be perfect for that because this book contains so much worth to discuss. Bravery, compassion, morality, betrayal, love, world war 2 from an american perspective and so much more

Young Jack Dalton is so grown up for such a young boy and he is very troubled by the death of his father and the fact that his final resting place is in a mass grave in Bataan. This is on young Jacks mind a lot and it deeply affect his daily life. This book is about his struggle to fit in this world and find his place in a world in war.

This was a very serious book and no laughing matter. I highly recommend it to all young adults and grown ups. This book will make you think. And when was it ever a bad thing to use ones mind to think?

Book Review: Moonlight Mayhem by Sherry Soule

Posted on 00:00 by Unknown
Author: Sherry Soule
Title: Moonlight Mayhem
Series: Spellbound Series #2
Genre: YA Paranormal romance
Purchase: Amazon
My rating: 4.5 stars!

About the book:
Otherworldly Creatures. Dazzling Magic. Fiery Romance.

Shiloh Ravenwolf thought she was getting used to the strange events in Whispering Pines, until the full moon brings another surge of supernatural threats to her coastal town. Ferocious wolves, deadly necromancers, and shambling zombies have descended upon the neighborhood, so Shiloh needs to gain control of her magical abilities—fast!

It sucks that she has a crippling fear of the dark, which for a demon hunter can be an epic problem. But she spends so much time wallowing in the darkness, how can she not become a part of it?

When her classmates are attacked by a mysterious creature and her father is murdered, Shiloh vows vengeance. Forcing her phobias aside, she forms an unlikely coven of supernaturally gifted teens to help her eradicate this menace. Except that’s not all Shiloh has to worry about. She’s battling a different monster within herself and struggling not to become the very thing she fights: evil.

But with demon blood inside her—anything can happen…

My Thoughts:

What can I say? I knew before I started this book that it would be great!
Before I started I was curious of the book title but now I definitively know. It really is a mayhem going on. You get new weird things happening and new characters that we are introduced to.
As the plot says Shiloh meets new allies and the people she allies with are soo unexpected! But I love it!
I must say that I at first thought that Sherry put to many different supernatural creatures in one book but as it progressed I ended up loving it. It would not be a good story otherwise.

Shiloh is so stongminded and when she wants something she makes it happen. I love how she doesn't care about what people thinks about her. If she want to dye her hair pink she does so without blinking.
I really felt sorry for Shiloh when her dad was killed and her sorrow was so great it could consume her. But she would not let it. Instead she turned to anger and vengance. Vengance is all she thinks about, but what happens when and if she finds it? That you will just have to see when you read it.

Trent, the all to lovely Trent! I love him too! I can´t really say much about him without spoilers so I will leave it at that =)
